"I choose... Makoto."
Wha?? She chose me?? I'm so happy...! But... What about Haru? He seems a bit upset over this...
Makoto's eyes widened. He couldn't believe that she had chosen him! A storm of feelings stirred within him... On the one hand, he was extremely happy and relieved he was chosen. The olive green-haired teen could finally go out with his crush! But on the other, he felt worried and reluctant. Haruka liked the same girl as he did, but their crush chose him! His face lightened up when she chose him but as soon as he saw Haruka, his face fell.
Haruka's face was blank, but his eyes were glued on the ground. He was trying not to look sad, but Makoto knew him better than that.
I'm so happy! She returns my feelings!
But she didn't return Haru's feelings...
Happy thoughts were mixed in with worried thoughts as he stood there, speechless. The awkward silence went on for quite some time until (Name) spoke up. "Is something wrong Makoto? Haru?"
Makoto's thoughts were interrupted as he snapped back into reality. He shook his head and smiled at the (h/c) girl. "Not really, no."
Haruka looked off to the side, acting like his normal self, and didn't say anything. Makoto looked worriedly back at Haruka, his best friend and former rival of (Name)'s affection. Once again, the happy yet worried thoughts flooded Makoto's mind.
I can go out with her!
But Haru can't...
Thought after thought filled his mind, pros and cons about being with his crush versus Haruka's happiness. The awkward silence was in play again, the three teens all standing on that rooftop, none saying a word.
Finally, Haruka's head turned back to face Makoto and (Name). The two teens put their attention into the black-haired teen in front of them, a bit surprised. "I wish you two the best."
Those six words shocked the olive-haired teen as he stared at Haruka with wide eyes. Haruka turned his head towards Makoto. "I'm fine, just so you know. Don't worry about me too much. There are plenty other fish in the sea."
All of a sudden, a growl of hunger sounded out as Haruka had said that. The boys turned their attention to (Name) who clutched her stomach and laughed. "Speaking of food, I'm starving. What do you guys have for lunch?"
"Mackerel with rice." Haruka responded with his usual dead-pan tone as he opened his bento and sat down.
Makoto laughed, grinned, and sat down as well. "As usual. Well, I have this omelet I made with the help of my mom. Ren and Ran helped too."
He opened his bento, revealing an omelet with a ketchup written message: 'Have a nice lunch Onii-san! -Ren and Ran' (Name) giggled at his younger siblings' message. "They must love their Onii-san huh?"
Makoto chuckled in reply. "Do you want some (Name)?"
"Yea! Well... If you don't mind. Because I sort of... Forgot my lunch? At home?" (Name) laughed nervously as she fiddled with her black blazer.
"Really?? Well if that's the case have some of my lunch (Name)!" He pushed his bento towards her and she sweat dropped.
"You don't need to worry so much about me Makoto... But thank you." She took his bento and ate some of the omelet. "Mm... It's really delicious!"
Makoto smiled. "Thanks (Name)."
Haruka silently watched them and ate his food. Makoto looked at Haruka and gave the teen a questioning look. Haruka stared back at Makoto and tilted his head towards (Name), happily eating some of the omelet. At first, Makoto was confused, but a split second later he realized what Haruka meant and his face flushed. He looked back at the (h/c)-haired girl, whose (e/c) orbs stared into his emerald green ones. His face flushed even more that even the tops of his ears were red. "Is something the matter Makoto? Are you getting sick?"
"N-no! I-I'm not sick! Aha..." He put on a wavering, embarrassed smile as he tried to absorb what Haruka tried to have him do.
"Then what's making you blush so hard for Makoto?" She curiously looked at his ears. "It's not like you to get really flustered over a little thing."
"W-well um... Y-You see..." Makoto looked at Haruka for help, but all the black-haired teen did was give him a look at said 'I can't help you, you must do this yourself.'
Haruka finished his lunch and got up. "I'm going back to class. I'll meet you there when you're finished with your meal."
"Oh alright Haru. See you." Haruka waved and went down the stairs, leaving Makoto and (Name) alone. (Name)'s attention turned back to Makoto. "What is it you want to tell me Makoto?"
He swallowed a bit and his cheeks and ears burned up a bit more. "T-the thing is... Well... I was wondering... If we could... If it's okay with you I mean! I-I get sometimes you're busy-"
(Name) tilted her head and gave Makoto back his omelet, leaving most of the omelet so he could eat it. "Are you asking me out?"
A splash of red filled up the remaining space that was not flushed with the rosy colored hue on Makoto's face. Unable to speak mostly because of nervousness, and embarrassment, he nodded.
The (h/c)-haired girl smiled. "Of course. When should we meet up?"
"Oh! Well... Maybe on the weekends? Since I really can't take you out on school days because of swim practice..."
"And you being the swim team captain?" Makoto nodded.
(Name) smiled. "I understand."
Makoto smiled even more than before and ate his lunch.
A real date with (Name)! Weekend... Please come already!
It was adorable to see Makoto try and ask me out~ I really can't wait for our date! But what should I wear? Maybe I can go shopping with Gou...
(Name) and Gou walked around the stores, searching for the perfect outfit for (Name)'s date with Makoto. They searched through different shirts, pants, skirts, dresses and shoes, but nothing stood out to the (h/c)-haired girl.
(Name) let out a sigh. "We might not find the right outfit Gou..."
"Don't worry too much (Name)-senpai! I'm sure we'll find the right dress!" Gou smiled as she searched through the racks of clothing, bringing out different outfits and putting them on in the dressing room. None of them looked right.
"Oh! What do you think of this one (Name)-senpai?" Gou held up a white and blue sleeveless round neck three-dimensional print dress with multicolor mosaic color patterns. (Name) stared at the dress.
"It's really cute... I like it! But are you sure Makoto would like that dress though?"
"I'm very sure! Actually I think he would like you in anything!" Gou smiled.
"Mm... I guess so... I'll go try it on." (Name) took the dress then walked into the dressing room, dressing into the multicolored mosaic dress. She looked at herself in the mirror. "Wow... It actually looks good on me..."
"Well? What are you waiting for (Name)-senpai? Come out, let's see it!"
"Alright..." (Name) stepped out of the dressing room.
Gou smiled widely. "You look so pretty in that dress!"
"You think so?" (Name) looked down at the dress and twirled a little in it. The skirt softly floated up and then down as she came to a stop.
"Of course! I'm sure Makoto-senpai will love it too!"
(Name) smiled back. "It's settled then. We'll get this dress."
"Alright then!" Gou grinned.
After (Name) changed back into her regular clothes, the girls went up to the cash register and bought the dress.
I'm really nervous... I don't want to mess up on our date... What do I even wear for our date?? Ahhh I'm not good at these things! Maybe I could ask my friends what I can do on a date with (Name)...?
"Oh?? Mako-chan, you want advice on your date with (Name)-chan??" Nagisa's eyes gleamed with excitement. "That's great!"
"Yes, I'm happy for you Makoto-senpai!" Rei smiled then pushed up his glasses. "Luckily for you, I've been researching love on your behalf! I believe you should show up to her door step with a confectionary gift to let her know she's special!"
"A gift? But what kind Rei?" Makoto was curious.
"Flowers, chocolate... Anything of the sort!"
"Oh! And maybe you can take her to an amusement park! Or take her shopping! Girls like shopping right?"
"Yes I believe so! Oh, and you can also compliment her to make her feel special! For example..." Rei cleared his throat and looked at Nagisa. "(Name), you look absolutely beautiful today."
Nagisa pretended to blush and giggle and replied back with a voice a bit high-pitched like a girl's. "Oh thanks Makoto~! You're too kind~"
Makoto hid his blushing face in his hands. "Wahhh... I don't know... I wouldn't be able to say it to her so easily..."
"Oh come on Mako-chan! It's not that hard! Here, pretend I'm (Name) and compliment me!" Nagisa smiled.
The olive-haired teen looked at the strawberry blonde-haired teen hesitantly. "Um... (Name)... You're..."
"I'm what?" Nagisa replied back in that high-pitched voice while Rei surveyed Makoto's performance.
"You're... I mean... Um..." Makoto sweat dropped. "Pretty...?"
Rei sighed a little and shook his head. "Try again Makoto-senpai, say it with more feeling."
"But... Nagisa isn't (Name)... And I'm pretty sure I would be way too nervous to even compliment her..."
Haruka looked at Makoto seriously. "Give her mackerel."
Makoto chuckled a bit and sweat dropped. "Mackerel? That's so like you Haru... But I don't think I could give her mackerel..."
"Hm... Plan B! How about you write her a poem?"
"Yep!" Nagisa smiled and took out some paper from his school briefcase. "Here! Put your most heartfelt feelings on this piece of paper if you're too nervous to compliment her!"
Makoto stared at the blank paper. "I'm not exactly the most poetic person..."
"Well at least give it a try!"
"Alright..." Makoto took the paper and took out a pencil. He wrote his inner most feelings, filling the blankness of the page with words. Soon, he almost had the whole front page covered with words. Nagisa smiled.
"I knew you could do it Mako-chan! Can we read it?"
"Thanks guys. It means a lot to me." Makoto smiled. "Oh, can you also help me edit it? I don't want to put too much, but my feelings for her are probably more than one page..."
"Of course Makoto-senpai!" Rei, Nagisa, and Haruka peeked over at Makoto's love poem. It was filled with beautiful words and sweet compliments Makoto always had wanted to say to (Name), but never had the courage to say. Rei and Nagisa smiled, and all three boys drew their attention back to the anticipating Makoto.
"How was it? Was it too much...?"
"No, it's perfect Makoto-senpai!"
"Mhm! I never knew you were such a good poet Mako-chan!"
"It was good. I still think you could give her mackerel."
"Thanks guys!" Makoto smiled. He was sure he was ready for his date.
The day arrived, with both teens getting ready for their date. Makoto was the first to arrive at their destination, the dessert cafe. As he sat at a table and waited for (Name), he glanced down at the love poem he wrote to her. His cheeks flushed as he read it over one more time. Ahhh... There must be so many grammatical mistakes... Maybe even spelling mistakes...! Oh no, will she laugh at it?? I can't give this to her! This is so embarrassing...! I'll just throw this away and get her something el-
The cafe door opened with (Name) walking in with her white and blue colorful mosaic dress. Makoto stared at the (h/c)-haired girl in awe, a blush staining his cheeks. She walked over to the table he was sitting at and sat across from him, the olive-green haired teen watching her every move. (Name) smiled. "Hey Makoto, sorry, did I keep you waiting?"
Makoto shook his head, coming back to reality. "O-oh, n-no! Not at all!"
He smiled. "You look amazing."
"Oh..." (Name)'s cheeks heated up and she looked away. "T-thanks... You look amazing too."
He flushed more at that comment. "Thanks...!"
An awkward silence fell between them. (Name) twirled her hair while Makoto drew circles on the table, both too nervous to say anything. Luckily, the silence was broken by a friendly waiter. "May I take your order?"
"Ah, sure." Makoto and (Name) both picked up menus and browsed through the selections. Makoto spoke first. "Could I get a chocolate cake?"
The waiter scribbled down his order and looked at (Name). "And for you?"
(Name) was still searching vigorously through the many delicious sweets. The waiter waited patiently, then (Name) finally looked up. "I would like (favorite dessert) please."
He wrote it down and smiled. "Alright then, a chocolate cake and (favorite dessert), it will arrive shortly."
The waiter took their menus, bowed, and left, bringing the awkward silence between the couple back. Say something...!
"So, how have you been (Name)/Makoto?" They both blurted out at the same time. "Oh, um, I've been doing well! Thanks for asking!"
They both laughed softly at how coincidentally in sync they were. "Sorry, sorry... But really, how have you been (Name)?"
"Oh, well, like I said, I've been doing well. I went shopping for clothes with Gou, and we found this dress!"
"Oh really? I like it, it's really nice."
"I guess Gou was right then!"
Makoto laughed. "Gou really knows me well!"
"She really does!" (Name) giggled and smiled at Makoto. "What about you Makoto? Have have you been?"
"Same with me! Oh, and um..." He looked at the floor with rosy cheeks. "That reminds me... I-I have something for you..."
"Oh?" (Name) flushed. "For me?"
"Y-yes... H-here...!" He thrust the poem to her. "I-it's not much but... I hope you like it...!"
"Oh, thank you..." She took the piece of paper and read it. Makoto anxiously waiting and fidgeting for (Name)'s reaction. As she read the poem, her cheeks flushed a brilliant rosy red.
(Name) looked at the olive green-haired teen. "This is wonderful... You came up with all this?"
Makoto averted her gaze and looked at the ground, rubbing the back of his head. "Y-yes... I-it's all the things I wanted to say to you... But was too embarrassed and didn't have the courage to..."
She gave him a soft smile. "You're so sweet... Thank you."
His face became a crimson. "I-it's not a problem..."
(Name) giggled as the waiter came back with Makoto's chocolate cake and (Name)'s (favorite dessert). She smiled at the waiter and thanked him. He bowed and left the two alone again, this time with a lighter atmosphere with joking and laughter.
Today was so fun! Makoto took me to an arcade and we won a lot of tickets! At the prize counter, he had enough to get me a cute orca plush~ I named the plush after Makoto, and it was so cute to see him blush when I said that~ Oh, it's getting late... I don't want this day to end already...
Makoto and (Name) walked to the (h/c)'s house hesitantly, not wanting the day to end. However, unluckily for the couple, they ẃere sadly mistaken; since their parents expected them back home around the time the sun set for dinner. The olive green-haired teen turned to the (h/c) with a smile. "Well... It looks like this is where we have to part (Name)..."
(Name) smiled gently back. "Yea... I really wish we had more time to do other things..."
Makoto chuckled. "Same here... But daylight doesn't last forever..."
"Maybe next time we can go to this sushi place I went to with my parents?"
"Oh, that would be fun!"
Soon, they arrived at (Name)'s house. They looked at each other with smiles, but a lingering sadness in their eyes. (Name) spoke, "Well... We're here."
"Yea. I guess it's time to say bye."
They both stood, neither one of them moving or letting the others hand go. Makoto stared into (Name)'s (e/c) orbs, and she looked back into his green eyes. As the silence went on, they seemed to be getting closer and closer...
"(Name)...?" Makoto's voice dropped to a soft whisper.
"I... I love you." Their lips met, and the two teens shared a shy, but loving kiss. The kiss rendered (Name) completely speechless. Soon, they pulled apart and looked in each others eyes.
"I-I love you too Makoto..."
The teen smiled at her words. "I'm glad..."
His thumb gently stroked the back of her hand, still holding onto it. "We should do this again."
(Name) nodded in agreement and smiled. "Yes... Let's."
